Hover Quest 0.1.0 - First Notes

Hi everyone,

I'm really happy to finally be putting this out there. Hover Quest is essentially my first game ever. I designed an extremely rough prototype for a dual throttle hover car around February 2019 before I knew how to do hardly anything in Unity. It sparked a ton of ideas at the time but I had to put them aside while learning more about game development. It wasn't until a few months ago that I really felt comfortable to dive back into the hover car project and start fleshing it out into something bigger and better.

There was one thing I knew the game had to have, and that's infinite terrain. I've always despised invisible walls in video games, and limitations like these are magnified significantly when in VR. I think back to games like Tribes 2 where matches where players were not only allowed to go out of bounds, but they could go infinitely far in any direction they wanted. Sometimes I would get caught up in a 1v1 grav cycle chase that would take me miles away from the game area. When I managed to kill my opponent in these scenarios, it was amazing to look around and literally feel lost, trekking my way back to where the rest of the match was taking place. Similarly in a game like Motocross Madness (which I believe I only had the demo), there were non-racing modes where you could just ride around freely.

The free roaming spirit of these games made me feel so much more welcome and immersed in these virtual worlds, so I decided not to make a racing game. Hover Quest will have racing elements, and maybe racing modes at some point, but it's not a racing game at heart. You're not confined to any time limits or any specific areas. This led to the idea of doing taxi missions, essentially being tasked with getting from point A to point B, B to C, C to A, and so on. I figured it would be a realistic goal, considering my skill level. This part is currently in development.

It took a lot of work getting an infinite terrain system running smoothly. When it finally worked, and I was able to drive around and go anywhere I wanted to, it shifted my mindset quite a bit. I saw more potential than ever and decided to try a few different things instead of just working on taxi missions. I started sketching out more and more ideas, discussing possibilities with friends and fellow developers, prototyping like crazy in Unity.

I'm going to leave off here before I get too far ahead of myself, but it feels great to have gotten this far. Hope you all enjoy the game!
